Why Are Online Degrees So Popular Today?

The popularity of online degrees is growing exponentially every year. According to the Canadian Virtual University, a consortium of thirteen traditional Canadian universities that offer online programs, their registration for online programs has increased ten percent since their inception in 2000. By 2006, the number of people registered in online courses reached 150,000. But what makes online degrees so enticing to so many students these days?

Online degrees offer students greater flexibility than earning a traditional college degree. Because all of the work is completed online, students generally never need to visit a physical location. This type of learning environment works well for those students who are unable to commit to spending time in a classroom, like parents, working professionals, older adults and students with part-time jobs. Having a more flexible schedule and learning environment also allows students to learn and study at their own pace in their own unique style. While some students enjoy sitting in a classroom, others require a quiet place to review and learn the coursework.

Online degrees are also growing in popularity because students can avoid some of the high costs associated with earning a traditional degree. Online colleges do not have to charge students extra expenses for maintaining a physical campus or for added amenities. And because students will not be attending a physical college, they will often save money on commuting, childcare and the cost of living on the campus itself. Online degrees are also now offering students expanded opportunities for social interactions. Chat rooms, forums and e-mail now give online students a way to make friends with other students in similar degree programs, communicate with their professors and to create virtual study groups. Online students have the ability to interact with people across the world that are in similar situations as themselves. Online colleges also tend to have a greater acceptance rate than traditional colleges. This helps those students who might have struggled with their education in previous years or who are unable to meet the stringent admissions requirements of traditional colleges.

With the economy still recovering from last year's downturn and the cost of traditional universities rising, many people are turning to online degree programs for their higher educational needs. They enjoy the ability to receive a degree without having to quit their jobs, relocate near a campus or endure a long commute. With the quality of online degrees also rising over the years and with so many choices and benefits available, their popularity will only increase in years to come.
