How Can I Find the Right Online Degree Program for Me?

The first step toward finding the right online degree program is to closely examine your current strengths and skills. For instance, if you consider yourself an analytical person and you have always been good with numbers, you may want to consider an online accounting program or engineering degree program. If you enjoy working with computers and consider yourself a creative person, you may want to consider an online graphic design or information technology degree program. Are you a strong writer? Consider a degree program in English or writing. Start by compiling a list of your strengths, and work from there.

Next, you should examine your career goals. If you are already working in a career you find interesting and rewarding, why not further your education in that area so that you are more qualified to advance in that career? For instance, if you have an associate degree in nursing and enjoy working in a medical environment, it may be wise to pursue an RN-to-BSN program so that you can eventually move up to a higher-paying nurse management position. If you enjoy working in the field of education as a teacher, you may want to prepare yourself in education administration at the graduate level so that you can garner higher pay as a teacher in the short term, and later qualify for leadership positions, such as principal or assistant principal, in the long term.

You will want to research online universities and see which ones offer the degree program you are interested in at the degree level you need. For instance, one online university may offer the degree you seek only up to the bachelor’s level, while another may offer it up to the doctoral level. In your research, you will need to consider an online university’s accreditation status and rankings. You can find out if an online university is accredited by running its name through the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada website.

Another way to discover the right online degree program for you is to call up your online university of choice after you have finished your research and ask to speak with an enrollment counselor or advisor. These professionals can walk you through a university’s programs, answer any questions you may have and help you enroll in the right program.
