Earning a college degree, whether from a traditional college or from an online college, is a great accomplishment. Since each type of degree offers students different environments of learning, social interaction and varying levels of independence, it is important to do some research before deciding which type of degree to seek, and which type of school to attend.
Online degrees are best suited for those students seeking a more flexible educational experience, like working professionals, stay-at-home parents, senior adults and traveling business people. Because students don't have to meet at a physical classroom at a set time each day, online degrees afford people a greater sense of independence and freedom. This also allows online students to work at their own pace and employ their own unique learning styles. Some people simply cannot learn while sitting in a room full of other people and distractions. Also, some online degrees cost significantly less than traditional degrees since the online school does not have to charge added fees for facility usage and maintenance — and because online students would not have to pay the added expenses of commuting to a physical school, living on-campus and childcare while they are away, they would save even more money.
Traditional degrees, on the other hand, offer students a much different learning environment. It provides students with a sense of community and a higher level of social interaction than that of an online degree. Sitting in a classroom together, working on group projects, joining a study group or sharing a lunch table can build relationships and camaraderie with other students. Traditional colleges also offer their students a wide range of facilities to use and other perks as part of their tuition. These can include a gym, sporting events, libraries, cafeterias and study rooms. Having these added features can enhance the college experience as a whole. Traditional degrees also offer students the ability to meet and speak with their professors in person. Some students enjoy the chance to build a relationship with their educator and seek additional assistance outside of the classroom.
As illustrated above, both online and traditional degrees can offer students a quality education with varying levels of expense, independence and social interaction. Because online and traditional degrees are so different, it is important for each student to understand what type of learning environment works best for them and to also research the schools before attending.
